One of the by lanes from the main canal of Alappuzha, winds away from the town clamour and makes a stop at Arunima Heritage, Mr. Sabu Sali and Laila’s 60 years old house. ‘Arunima’, Mr. Sali explains, means the red tinged colour of the sky at dusk and dawn. After having retired as a District Registrar from a neighbouring region, the couple has opened their warm home to guests for the last couple of years. A veteran of Alappuzha, you can find Mr. Sali drifting into many fascinating stories of yester years as he lounges in the spacious verandah of the house.

The house is an idyllic break from the busting town, and has a variety of birds and trees in the vicinity. Four rooms with generous space are simplistically equipped but have large windows for plenty ventilation and natural light. One of the rooms has a huge wooden swing handing from the ceiling. The centrally located living room has a mysterious foldable ladder which leads to an opening in the roof. An open courtyard at the back with a well and a chatty parrot, demand an exploration and rapt attention to absorb the numerous stories attached to it.

The house, though modestly equipped exudes great warmth and hospitality. Laila is known to express her affection by food and spoil guests silly with delectable treats. If it happens to be your birthday, you are sure to get an indulgent breakfast.
