Mountain Quail Camp,Pangot

Isolated from the regular touristy clamour of Nainital, Pangot is a refreshing change for those who are looking for some serenity. The Kilbury Road from Nainital leads up to the alluring hills of Pangot from where a spectacular view of the Garhwal range and the valleys of Ramnagar, Kashipur & parts of Corbett National Park emerges. As a young trekker from school, Siddharth always dreamt of an adventurous life in Pangot. After years, a persuasive Siddharth bought some land on top of a hill from a neighbouring farmer. After a modest beginning with some tents, the camp now has five impressive tents and three cottages.

Certainly an idyllic place to get lost in the wildlife, the camp is set up by Siddharth and Bhavna in a charming way. The low roofed wooden cottages are done up in bright colours with a common seating area which houses a Bukhara (fireplace); a definite requirement for winters. Bright red steps against a contrasting blue door lead up the attic in one of the rooms. Each corner is tastefully set up to be in tune with each other. The tents, mostly taken up by trekkers for preparation for the forthcoming hardship, are contradictorily comfortable with attached bathrooms. The camp emulates the climb of the mountain and has the glass walled dining room on the one level and the common area above it. The thatched roof circular common area with seating and a blackboard is great for briefing trekkers and holding workshops as well.  One Kumaoni meal is a must in the camp for visitors to get the palette acquainted with the local food. The brilliant food is an additional complimentary treat with the fantastic view from the camp.

The best time to visit Pangot, apart from the trekking expeditions, is the time when rhododendrons flowers colour the hill top red. March to July is the perfect time to enjoy the mild sun as the rest of the country scorches in the Indian summer.

Though Bernie and Jojo, the couple’s two dogs pretty much reign the camp, owners can bring pets after discussion.
