Supriya Sehgal

Nele, Bangalore

Nele Homestay, away from the clutter of the town and yet comfortably proximate to get around, certainly lives up to the meaning of its name – The Abode! Tucked away amidst the lush green vicinity of 1.5 acres, a rare delight in the city, Nele sits well in sync with its surrounding. The earthy colours and open spaces blend in beautifully and one is immediately transported to a peaceful environment. One can see Satya Kumar and his wife Kausalya’s ingenuity through the house. Pillars that line the spacious verandah and the main door have been sourced from the famous Chettinad destination, Karaikudi. These would been part of an illustrious past and acquired from an old ‘haveli’ of the region. Even the green tiles have been specially bought from there. The soil stabilized bricks used for the house, also make an impressive impact on the aesthetics of the house. The Tulsi plant & a lamp at the facade of the house greet with you with warm Hindu hospitality.

The most enigmatic part of the house is the central courtyard which emulates the slope of the erstwhile topography of the place. A naturally terraced garden runs in the middle of the house with rocks cradling a stream. A large tree also makes its way through the open roof.  Choose a spot around the courtyard to watch the rain come down in the middle of the house, during the monsoons.

Well travelled and extremely hospitable, the couple make perfect hosts and one can spend a considerable time talking about various parts of the world. A keen cook himself, Satya compliments Kausalya’s expertise in the kitchen. Be sure to ask him to prepare some continental food for you. If you are lucky and the resident hare has had his fill, you might be able to eat some treats from the vegetable garden.
