The Junction Homestay, Kumily

Situated amidst the rolling hills of Vandanmedu region near Kumily, the access to Junction Homestay is easy and yet it is pleasantly tucked away from the tourist hub. The modern house, built in 2005 by Mr. Biju Thomas and his wife is a fantastic blend of modern facilities merging well with the Kerala tradition and countryside feel on the outside. Ensuring that the guests get a glimpse of Kerala, all furniture and furnishings are in traditional materials and designs. The spacious airy rooms give a chance for city dwellers to take in the fresh air. The view from the first floor rooms is exceptionally good as the area is surrounded by the reserve forest and plantations. The area, being a cardamom haven, is dotted with plantations. With multiple traditional drying units in the vicinity, the smell of fresh cardamom never leaves the air – a pleasant change from traffic and pollution.

Having business interest in cardamom, Mr Biju has always grown up with the intricate details of the processes. This makes for a great conversation on the nuances of cardamom over breakfast. Mrs. Molly is also great company and can give you some valuable insights into Kerala food and how it’s cooked. Be ready for some culinary delights in typical Kerala style.

Pets: Pets are allowed in the Thomas household. Infact, there is plenty of room for your pet but do discuss this with the hosts before arriving.

Activities:

  1. A colony of elephants in close proximity to the house is a huge charm for children. Elephants can be hired for short rides at a cost.
  2. Many come to Kerala in order to experience the holistic benefits of Ayurvedic Massages, but without guidance it is difficult to choose a credible centre. A good Ayurvedic massage centre is known to the family and they can guide you appropriately after discussion of whats your exact need.
  3. Since the region is sprinkled with cardamom units, a trip into one of the traditional drying units will be a great experience. Many units use the wood fire ovens for drying which results in a wonderful smell wafting close by. The closest cardamom drying unit is only about 2 kms away.
  4. Tea is also an extremely popular produce here. There cannot be a better cup of tea, other than from the freshest pick. Visit a tea estate and a factory about 10 kms away to know more about tea cultivation and tasting.
  5. Given that the region is replete with greenery and a verdant forest, short hikes are convenient and make for great day trips.
  6. There are a number of sight-seeing options like Munnar & Thekkady. Being in the state for a long time, the hosts can also help you plan your further Kerala journey!

Facilities:

  1. There is ample parking space in the house.
  2. Hot and Cold water is available at all times
  3. Doctor on Call
  4. Though being ‘phone-free’ will be a great idea for a break but if you really want to use a land-line phone for ISD facilities, you can check with the hosts.
  5. Pick up and drop from the bus-stop or closest rail/air head can be arranged at a cost. Cabs can also be booked for sight-seeing and further journey.
